Public Health Update for Clinicians: Updated Requirements for Proof of Immunity to Measles in Individuals Working in Schools and Childcare Settings

Alert Date
Location
Windsor-Essex County

With the current state of measles in Ontario, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, would like to advise of updated requirements for proof of immunity for individuals working in schools and childcare settings who may be exposed to measles.

In the event of a measles exposure in one of these settings, administrators will be required to work closely with the WECHU to notify all their staff, regardless of their birth year, that they must provide proof of immunity to measles in order to be able to return to work. This applies to all personnel, including volunteers. Any staff member who cannot provide documented proof of immunity will be excluded from the workplace by the WECHU until such proof is submitted or until they are no longer at risk to transmit the disease in those settings.

We are asking Health Care Providers (HCP) to support this effort by facilitating timely access to required documentation and, if needed, providing immunizations for individuals in these settings, helping to minimize disruptions in childcare or school operations.

Documentation that may be requested by the affected staff includes:

  • Immunization records showing proof of measles immunity
  • Serological evidence of immunity
  • A detailed note from a HCP confirming a history of measles infection

If you have any questions, please call the WECHU, Monday to Friday, between 8:30am and 4:30pm, at 519-258-2146 Ext. 1420. For more information on measles, please visit our website
