Health Canada has released a consumer advisory regarding the use of plasma pens, also known as fibroblast devices. Plasma pens are hand-held devices that heat and burn the skin using focused electricity on the skin surface. They are used for cosmetic skin treatments such as eyelid lifts, wrinkle reduction, and removal of moles, skin tags, scars, and spots.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is collaborating with provincial public health partners, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Health Canada, as well as the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC) and the United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA), to investigate an outbreak of E. coli infections in Ontario and Quebec, and several U.S. states.

Memo to Windsor/Essex Community
As you may have heard in the media in recent days, several medicines containing the ingredient valsartan are being recalled by their manufacturers. An impurity, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), was found in the valsartan used in some batches of these products. Six companies have affected products, which are being recalled. It is important to understand that not all valsartan products are impacted, and, as we currently understand it, only certain batches of the impacted manufacturers medicines are affected.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is following up on two cases of H3N2 canine influenza (CIV) in Essex County. This is the first known incursion of H3N2 CIV in Canada. We would like to take this opportunity to provide a brief update to veterinarians.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is issuing a public notice that instructions listed on the backside of a Take Charge Windsor-Essex Choose Water bookmark, pictured below, are incorrect. Following the instructions listed under “Water Bottle Safety” may cause the creation of, and exposure to, gas containing chlorine and could possibly lead to eye irritation or minor respiratory symptoms such as coughing or throat irritation.
