Schools play an important role in preventing and addressing youth vaping. Following the 2024 updates to Ontario's PPM 128, schools are required to address the possession, use, and sharing of nicotine and vaping products on school property. PPM 128 emphasizes education, support, and notification when incidents occur.
Youth vaping continues to be a concern in Ontario and Windsor-Essex. Most students who vape are vaping products that contain nicotine, which can affect brain development and lead to nicotine dependence. Vaping can also impact student well-being and disrupt learning environments.
Rather than relying solely on punitive measures, the focus is on prevention, education, cessation support, and helping students make healthier choices. To support schools, the Health Unit has developed enhanced PPM 128 resources that promote a progressive discipline approach.
