As measles continues to circulate in the Windsor-Essex community, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is advising all day camps and summer programming providers to take proactive steps to protect the health of children and staff.
The WECHU is urging camp operators and organizers to visit www.wechu.org for up-to-date guidance and recommendations to follow prior to the start of programming.
This includes information on:
- Messaging to encourage campers and staff to have records available in the event of a measles exposure
- Recognizing symptoms of measles and protocols for suspected cases
- Reporting requirements and measles case and contact management procedures
- Infection prevention and control measures, including cleaning protocols in the event of an exposure
In addition, the WECHU is requesting that all camp and program organizers submit their contact informationthrough the WECHU website to ensure timely communication in the event of a confirmed or suspected case of measles. This will help public health officials respond quickly and effectively to protect participants and staff and minimize the need for disruption in the camp experience.
“Measles is a highly contagious disease that can spread quickly in group settings like camps,” said Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, Medical Officer of Health at the WECHU. “Ensuring that all participants are protected through vaccination and that camps are prepared to respond to potential cases is critical to keeping our community safe.”
The WECHU continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as needed. Camp organizers are encouraged to check the website regularly and subscribe to WECHU alerts for the latest public health information.
