October 2, 2026  | 4:30 p.m. | Windsor-Essex County

As election signs continue to appear across Windsor-Essex, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is reminding voters and candidates that some of the most important health decisions in our communities start at the municipal level. From housing affordability and emergency preparedness to mental health supports and community safety, local leadership has a direct impact on community well-being.

To help inform local conversations during the 2026 municipal election, the WECHU has provided all municipal candidates with a public health information package highlighting five key issues across Windsor-Essex for which they can have an impact. Residents are encouraged to review the same information and use it to engage candidates in meaningful discussions about the future of their communities.

The resource highlights five public health priorities:

Children and Youth Mental Health

Supporting access to recreation, safe public spaces, and opportunities for connection can help young people thrive and build resilience.

Emergency Preparedness

Strong local planning helps communities respond to disease outbreaks, extreme weather events, and other emergencies.

Substance Use

Evidence-informed local approaches can help prevent harms associated with alcohol, tobacco, vaping, cannabis, opioids, and other substances.

Food Insecurity

Access to affordable housing, nutritious food, and essential supports contributes to healthier individuals and communities.

Intimate Partner Violence

Community policies, partnerships, and prevention efforts can help address intimate partner violence and promote safer communities.

Municipal elections are an opportunity to shape the future of Windsor-Essex. The WECHU encourages residents to learn about these issues, ask candidates where they stand, and consider how local decisions can support healthier, safer, and more resilient communities.
