Media Statement: Ways to Protect Yourself and Others Against the Avian Flu

Issued: Tuesday, May 6, 2025 | 10:00 a.m. | Windsor and Essex County

The following statement can be attributed to Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, the Medical Officer of Health for the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU):

“The WECHU is reminding our community that Avian Influenza continues to circulate among the bird population. With the change in seasons, birds are migrating back to our region in large numbers, potentially bringing illness with them. Avian flu has been spreading to other animals, and there have been cases of human transmission in other states and provinces.

I have shared some key tips in a short video to help keep our residents safe from the spread of avian flu. Keep yourself, your family, and your pets safe when enjoying the outdoors by avoiding sick or dead birds or other animals.

The video can be viewed on the WECHU’s YouTube channel and social media feeds.”
