Predictive Modeling Program: Frequently Asked Questions

This predictive model would be an addition to our beach monitoring and notification program to improve public health. The predictive model uses a mathematical equation to predict the bacteria (E.coli) levels in the beach water. It considers environmental factors such as beach water clarity and weather conditions to generate a predicted result.

This predictive model is an addition to our beach monitoring and notification program to improve public health by reducing the incidence of water-borne illnesses.

Predictive modeling can provide daily water quality results based on the most recent environmental conditions at the beach. The results can help you make an informed decision on whether to go into the water when visiting one of the participating beaches on the weekdays.

Water quality can change with environmental conditions between weekly routine sampling dates. The predictive model will provide timely weekday results so you can make an informed decision on whether to go into the water when visiting one of the participating beaches.

No, predictive models are used to supplement, not replace routine water sampling.

Yes, this program will run the same length of time as our routine beaching monitoring program from May to August.

No, this is a voluntary program and currently five beaches have chosen to participate. The participating beaches are:

  • Sandpoint Beach
  • Lakeshore Lakeview Park West Beach
  • Point Pelee North West Beach
  • Colchester Beach
  • Holiday Beach

The results will be posted Monday to Friday (except holidays) online as well as on our Beach Information Hotline (519-258-2146 x 1490).

Routine beach water sampling results will take precedence over predictive modeling results and will determine beach closures. If bacterial count warrants closing the beach, modeling results will be displayed as “Beach Closed” during the period of closure.

There may be times when the collection of all required samples may not be possible due to weather/environmental conditions, safety concerns or other unforeseen circumstances. In these situations, results will be reported as ‘Not Applicable’.

You can call us at 519-258-2146 ext. 4475 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, to speak with a Public Health Inspector.
