News Release: Celebrating Success: Over 98% of Elementary Students Have Updated Immunization Records in Windsor and Essex County
For Immediate Release
March 10, 2026 | 10:00 a.m. | Windsor and Essex County
In the fall of 2025, immunization records of all elementary students in Windsor and Essex County (WEC) were reviewed (46,163 records). Today, 98.7% of these students are up to date with the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) requirements. This achievement reflects the strong WEC community dedication to keeping students protected from vaccine preventable diseases.
A school suspension is now in effect for 588 WEC elementary students in accordance with ISPA (1990), Section 11, Subsections (1) and (2). This law requires public health units to maintain and review immunization records for every student attending school in Ontario and to enforce a school suspension on students with incomplete immunization records.
Elementary students suspended today may return to school once they have received required missing immunizations and/or missing immunization record(s) are provided to the Windsor Essex County Health Unit (WECHU).
Families can reach out to their health care provider to receive immunizations and/or obtain missing immunization information. Families can request that their health care provider then submit updated immunization records to the WECHU. Families can also submit updated immunization records online at immune.wechu.org but note that proof of immunization must be provided as an attachment. The WECHU is here to help affected families. Walk-in immunization services are available, at our Windsor and Leamington offices.
Secondary Student Immunization Process
As a separate reminder for secondary school students and families, the deadline to update secondary student immunization records with the WECHU is Friday March 27, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. In accordance with the ISPA, secondary students whose records are not updated with the WECHU by this deadline will be suspended from school effective Tuesday March 31, 2026.
For additional information on school immunizations and the suspension process, visit the WECHU website.
