Healthy eating is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Healthy eating ensures your body gets all the nutrients it needs.  It also helps reduce your risk of developing chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

It’s recommended to have a healthy pattern of eating most of the time. Healthy eating doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite foods, but try to choose healthier options more often. The pattern of eating over longer periods of time is more important than any one meal or food.

Try to include these suggestions into your everyday diet to ensure it’s a healthy one.

  • Eat a variety of foods from Canada’s Food Guide.
  • Eat three meals each day.
  • Eat balanced meals and snacks:
    • Include at least three of the four food groups at each meal.
      • e.g., mixed bean and veggie chilli with a whole grain roll on the side includes three food groups (Meat and Alternatives, Vegetable and Fruit, and Grains food groups)
    • Include at least two of the four food groups at snacks.
      • e.g., lower fat cheese and whole grain crackers include two food groups (Milk and Alternatives and Grains food groups)
  • Control servings or portions.
  • Listen to your hunger cues by eating only when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re satisfied.

Healthy Menu Labelling

As of January 1, 2017, all food-service businesses with 20 or more locations in Ontario must post the number of calories for the food and drink items on their menus or on display. This is required by the Ontario Government as part of the Healthy Menu Choices Act, 2015.
