Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria (germs), called Treponema pallidum.
Syphilis is a bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum bacteria and spread by sexual contact (Heymann, 2015). The disease can result in either acute or chronic outcomes resulting in four possible stages of infection, if left untreated.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is monitoring the current outbreak of COVID-19 (2019 Novel Coronavirus) in China and around the world.
Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and syphilis, are increasing across Ontario and locally, in Windsor and Essex County. These infections pose a serious health risk to individuals and their partners. Complications from acquiring these infections range from chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and sterility, to more systemic infections of other organs, such as the heart and brain.
