The annual Healthy Workplace Awards ceremony took place on Wednesday morning with local workplaces attending the virtual event. While business owners and not-for profit organizations accepted their awards for the first time in its 18 year history over a web-based conferencing system, this was not the only major change to be prompted by the COVID-19 public health protection measures.
In previous years, organizers hosted the healthy workplace award breakfast to recognize local workplaces for implementing comprehensive workplace wellness activities and initiatives to promote positive lifestyle behaviours among their staff. As a result of COVID-19 and the exceptional efforts of local businesses to keep employees and the public safe, the Healthy Workplace Awards organizers shifted focus to acknowledge the challenges and opportunities associated with safe reopening and operations, while continuing to prioritize public health. Three key areas were highlighted in the awards application criteria for 2020, which included Health and Safety, Mental Health Promotion, and Organizational Social Responsibility during the pandemic. Applicants were required to provide examples of activities or measures that were put in place to support employee and community health, safety, and mental well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Organizers of the revamped Healthy Workplace Awards 2020 program included member agencies of the local Working Toward Wellness Committee, along with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, Family Services Windsor-Essex, and the Canadian Mental Health Association - Windsor-Essex County Branch. Committee members reviewed all applications thoroughly and were pleased to recognize 31 local workplaces with awards. Award recipients and other participating workplaces also enjoyed a keynote presentation from psychology professor, published author, TEDx speaker, and retired psychologist, Dr. Andrea Dinardo.
