To address the possibility of lead in our water supply, there are several steps being taken by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, local municipalities and the utility companies.
Raw Alfalfa Sprouts Purchased in the US Linked to Salmonella Contamination
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today recommended that consumers not eat raw alfalfa sprouts, including sprout blends containing alfalfa sprouts, until further notice because the product has been linked to Salmonella contamination.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit continues to monitor the City of Windsor garbage disposal situation during the CUPE work stoppage. Health Unit staff investigate and assess complaints related to garbage that may cause a hazard to the public’s health.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is pleased to announce the addition of a new online Food Handler Course that was launched on Tuesday, April 6, 2010. The online course is available to all people and is convenient for those who have a hard time fitting an in-class course into their schedules.

Cleanup efforts after a flood must begin as soon as possible, but before you begin your personal safety must be taken into consideration. The most important factor before cleaning up after a flood is electrical safety, watch for electrical shorts and live wires, to prevent electrocution.
Food Safety After an Emergency
Identify and throw away contaminated food. In the event of a natural disaster or emergency incident, be sure to carefully inspect all food items and do not eat any food you think may be unsafe.
Warning: Public Health Inspection Scam
Dr. G. Allen Heimann, Medical Officer of Health, is issuing a warning to all local food premise owners and operators in Windsor-Essex County that individuals alleging to be a public health inspector are calling businesses to schedule an inspection of their premise. The staff at the Health Unit have received two reports of such activity.
Boil Water Advisory Rescinded - Monday, July 26, 2010
Dr. G. Allen Heimann, Medical Officer of Health is rescinding the Boil Water Advisory issued on July 23, 2010 for customers in the Village of Comber in Lakeshore within the following areas including South of Highway 401 to County Road 46 inclusive of municipal #14402 to #3223 County Road 46.
