Program overview
Ontario law requires that all food premises are inspected by a Public Health Inspector (PHI). During an inspection, the inspector checks to see that the owner or operator of a food premises is following safe food practices. Safe Food Counts turns the results of food premises inspections into food safety stars.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is dedicated to keeping our community healthy by promoting improved health, preventing disease and injury, controlling threats to human life and function, and facilitating social conditions to ensure equal opportunity in attaining health for all.

As part of this mandate, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has developed the food safety disclosure program, Safe Food Counts.

Safe Food Counts has three goals.
  • to improve food safety practices
  • to raise awareness of food safety
  • to reduce the risk of food-borne illness

  • A food premises is a place where you buy food, such as a restaurant, fast food place, convenience store, or grocery store.

Please note: until Safe Food Counts is implemented, the public can access the results of a food premises inspection by calling 519-258-2146 ext. 1473.

We are developing several educational resources for the public and food premises operators. In order to ensure these materials are useful, we recently met with our food premises advisory group to discuss the operator guide.

We are currently reviewing the feedback and incorporating it into our program plans.
