Public Health Inspection safe guards our community from disease and illness. The role of a Public Health Inspector (PHI) involves education, consultation, inspection, monitoring and if necessary, enforcement of health legislation. The scope of their work includes food safety, health hazard prevention, communicable disease investigation, recreational water inspection, and safe water management. PHIs spend a significant portion of their time conducting inspections in a wide range of work settings including most frequently, food premises. They assess the particular circumstances, provide advice, and ensure compliance with policies and regulations. PHIs also take an active role in educating both the general public and owners and operators about health protection regulations and best practices in the area of public health. The day to day activities of a PHI are often determined by: - the immediate needs of the public that are communicated to the Health Unit through the complaint process, or
- will consist of frequent regularly scheduled inspections of all facilities that fall under the public health umbrella.
