Smokers’ Helpline - Telephone Counselling and On-line Resources

Telephone Counselling

Provided in both English and French, the Canadian Cancer Society’s Smokers’ Helpline is a free, confidential telephone service staffed by trained quit specialists.  The staff can help smokers’ develop a structured “Quit Plan”, answer questions about quitting and refer individuals to services in their own community.

The toll free service can be accessed at 1-877-513-5333.  The service is available Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

Online Resources

This resource is also available from the Canadian Cancer Society and expands on some of the services offered through telephone counselling.  The on-line version offers users a variety of helpful resources as well as access to a supportive online community of others who are in a similar situation.

Once registered, users have access to the following tools:

a)  Glove Compartment – Allows you to keep track of your:

Mileage – the amount of time you’ve been smoke free, the money you’ve saved since quitting, the number of cigarettes you have not smoked since quitting and the life you have gained by quitting
Public Pledge – your commitment to quit smoking and the key reason why you quit
Passport ot Success – your results from all the exercises and quizzes you have completed on your road to success
Cravings Diary – a graph that shows your decrease in withdrawal symptoms and cravings as you progress through the first few months of your quit
