What can prenatal screening tell you?
- If you have an increased risk of having a baby with specific chromosome abnormalities or neural tube defect, or the possibility of other problems.
What does the screening involve?
- An ultrasound for baby’s age and to measure the nuchal translucency (NT). NT is a measurement taken at the back of the developing baby’s neck, at 11 to 13.6 weeks.
- A blood test to measure the level of protein at 11 to 13.6 weeks.
- A second blood test ideally at 16 weeks.
If indicated, diagnostic testing and prenatal counselling can then be offered. Please ask your doctor for a pamphlet to get more information.
